Adaptive Toy Collection expands to Land O’ Lakes library. |
The Rotary Club of Keystone-Sunrise recently contributed an additional 45 items for their Adaptive Toy Collection. The Adaptive Toys are a collection of over 115 specialty devices/toys that have been adapted to encourage play in children with physical, visual, auditory, cognitive and communication impairments. The toys light up, vibrate, make noise, or have large pieces so that they can be easily manipulated. Children learn through play and children with special needs may have difficulty interacting with mainstream toys. Because these toys are enhanced with lights, vibration, textures and sound, they provide added feedback to the child which encourages further exploration and provides motivation to play.
The Adaptive Toy Collection is housed and circulated by the Pasco County Library System. Pasco County Libraries is one of two library systems in the state of Florida that is circulating toys for children with special needs. The toys can be accessed through any of the seven county branches and are available to all patrons of the library. There are binders located at each of the libraries that provide a pictorial display of the collection. The collection can also be viewed on line at the Pasco Country Library website pascolibraries.org.
The collection has been largely funded by the Rotary Club of Keystone-Sunrise. Individuals, businesses, organizations and clubs in the community have also contributed to the collection. Donors contributing $100.00 or more receive recognition on the Keystone Rotary Adaptive Toy Collection plaque displayed at the Hudson Regional Library Branch.
